Pamper Yourself with a DIY Spa Day

Just like your cat deserves all those cuddles, you deserve to treat yourself to a day of pampering too! While Kitty Bingo can provide the fun, it’s up to you to gather some yummy treats (both the edible and non-edible kind) and give yourself a relaxing day at your at-home spa.

Grab a latte and read on, as we discuss what you’ll need to set up the purrfect DIY spa day chez vous.

1. Gather the essentials

Put on your fluffiest bathrobe, prepare a skin-nourishing mask recipe, and gather everything you’ll need for a luxurious self-care session. Think candles (yes, the ones you’ve never even lit), massage and essential oils, and of course, your very best skincare products. If you’re planning this in advance, you could even buy yourself some gorgeous flowers!

You’ll want to pre-prepare your face and hair mask, so below are some delicious DIY recipes to try out.

DIY face and hair mask recipes

  • Milk and honey hair mask – As the legend goes, the Ancient Egyptian queen, Cleopatra, bathed in milk to keep her hair and skin looking, well, divine. And now you can too! This mask works to repair damaged-looking hair. Add 1 tablespoon of honey to 1 cup of warm milk and mix thoroughly. And there you have it: your DIY mask is ready to apply to your scalp and hair!
  • Honey and olive duo face and hair mask – Honey is both antibacterial and replenishing, while olive oil works to condition the hair and skin, and helps to boost radiance, too. Combine 2 tablespoons of olive oil with ½ cup of honey, then massage the mixture into your face and over the whole length of your hair.
  • Coconut and sugar face mask – This exfoliating mask works as a gentle scrub and helps to remove dead skin cells. Mix 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, 1 tablespoon of raw sugar, 1 tablespoon of honey, and 2 drops of an essential oil of your choice. Good options include peppermint for a cooling, anti-inflammatory effect, and tea tree oil for a deeper cleanse. Once this is mixed into a smooth paste, you’re all prepped!

2. Set the mood

Clear your space, get rid of any clutter, light some scented candles, and put on some good music. Whether you’re in the mood for soothing nature sounds and binaural beats, or you’re in need of a confidence boost and a little booty-shaking – create a beautiful, fragrant, uplifting space to set the mood for pampering and relaxation.

3. Tune into your body

Now that you’ve created the space, you’re ready to step off the hamster wheel of life for a while… and check in with yourself. We all have our own way of doing this – some may want to perform a little tea ceremony; others may choose to do a yoga class online, or maybe you’d simply like to relax on the sofa for a good long while with your feet up and an eye mask on. Take this time to slow down, quieten your mind, breathe a little deeper, and relax the areas of tension where you carry stress. You deserve this!

4. Run a bath

You don’t need to tell us twice! While you may like to play bingo on a Tuesday evening after a hectic day, a dedicated spa day offers a way to truly relax, and a long, hot bath is definitely right there, at the top of the list!

Once you’ve lit your candles (or incense, if that’s more your thing), and chosen your playlist, the next step is to add some extra-special flair. You can keep things simple by putting a few drops of essential oils in the water – bergamot oil to relax your muscles and soothe your nerves, jasmine oil to give you a mood boost, or lemongrass oil to gently detox your skin and unclog your pores. You could also add some of your favourite bubble bath mixtures, or even drop the bath bomb your bestie got you for your birthday!

Have a cup of herbal tea or a jar of fresh lemon water at your side, put your phone on silent, slip into those soothing bubbles and soak up the goodness!

5. Treat your face and hair

Once you’ve hit total relaxation mode, you can add the face or hair mask you prepared earlier to the mix. But first – massage! Here are the steps you’ll take for a heavenly DIY face and hair treatment:

Cleanse your face using a cloth and your preferred facial cleanser, and pat dry.

Gently massage a few drops of light oil (coconut, almond or sesame oil will do) into your neck and face using your hands, a gua sha stone, or a jade roller. Make sweeping motions with your fingers, starting from the centre of the face and working your way outward, following the contours of your face. Apply light pressure to encourage lymphatic drainage and nourish the skin.

For the head massage, start at your hairline and apply firm pressure with your fingers, sweeping them towards the crown of your head. It should feel really energising and refreshing.

Wash your hands, and apply your face and hair mask.

Leave the mask on for 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing it off.

Give yourself a good overall scrub and finish off by moisturising.

6. Optional upgrades

Think: doing your nails, waxing your legs, or shaping your eyebrows. What would you like to include in your spa day to really feel like the superstar that you are? Do something self-indulgent that you might not have time for in your usual daily routine – something that always leaves you feeling better than before. This is the time you’ve dedicated to yourself, so fill it with things that make you feel good. Only you can press the “reset” button!

7. Prepare a treat of a meal

Cook something you love, or order in! Whatever your choice may be, now’s the time to give your body what it needs – because while you may be feeling good on the outside, you’ll need to feel good on the inside too. A green smoothie? Yes please! Chocolate-dipped strawberries? Obviously. A good ol’ spag bol (with extra cheese)? Always! Whether you need to feed your soul with something chocolatey or nourish yourself with a zingy, colourful salad – prepare a good meal, set the table (TV trays in front of your favourite series count)… and dig in!

8. Do something you enjoy

Pampering yourself isn’t just about face masks and bubble baths: self-care means carving time out of your schedule to do the things you love and enjoy, the things that make you feel good, as well as the things that give you a sense of balance and well-being. Whether it’s reading a book, playing a game of bingo online, spending time with your kitty, or going for a jog (yes, there are people in this world who actually enjoy jogging and do so willingly), it’s all about finding balance in your life. End your day by filling your cup, both literally and figuratively, with things that nurture, replenish, and inspire you!
