The legendary Ranking Roger!!
Were you as dumbfounded as we were? To hear about the passing of Roger Charlery aka Ranking Roger!! The legendary British singer died at the age of 56 on Tuesday 26th March 2019.
He passed away at his home surrounded by his loved ones. In 2018, before he embarked on his US tour, Roger announced that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer.
Roger who was born in Birmingham in 1963, founded the Beat Band in 1978. He was the vocalist of the Beat which fused traditional ska music with elements such as pop, punk, rock, Latin, new wave and became the pioneer in the two-toned music genre.
The band released 3 albums in the early 1980s:
- I Just Can’t Stop It (1980)
- Wha’ppen (1981)
- Special Beat Service (1982)
The Beat’s best-known songs include “The Tears Of A Clown” which had been a hit for Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. The song “Mirror in the bathroom” their biggest hit yet. Which reached No.4 in Britain in 1980. Other well-known songs are:
- Too Nice To Talk To
- Can’t Get Used To Losing You
The Beat band broke up in 1983, which Roger pursued solo projects and collaborations with well-known bands and artists. This included Big Audio Dynamite and Sting. In 1995, Charely and Wakeling got back together for another jamming session.
Despite health challenges and concerns Charlery released an album in January 2019 and finished a memoir which will be published this Spring. Look out for the album “Public Confidential”.
